Group formed for Marcellus Shale Formation
A group has been formed in support of the development of the Marcellus Shale Formation with hydrofracking.
The organization is calling itself Clean Growth Now, and comes as the debate over hydrofracking is heating up in Albany.
A formal roll out of the group is expected Thursday November 10, 2011.
It comes as the Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing whether to allow permits for hydrofracking, a natural gas extraction process that involves blasting a mixture of chemicals, sand, and water underground in order to access the gas.
State Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens said the meeting with the Hydrofracking Advisory Board was constructive.
"They went through a list of benefits from drilling that is already occurring in the county, should we go forward with high volume hydraulic fracturing. They also raised a number of concerns. They gave us a list of their concerns and gave very specific recommendations what they would do if they were in the state's shoes," said State Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens.
Polls show the public is split on whether hydrofracking should be allowed in New York, but according to a recent Marist College poll, one in five voters say they do not know enough about it to form an opinion.
