Economics of Oil Shales = Prime Natural Gas for Steady Rise

Much has been written about the Marcellus shales, the largest shale gas field in the US.  The rapid drilling program has been responsible for a supply glut, which drove spot prices down this year as low as $2.00 per mmBtu.  Since then, prices have recovered somewhat, to the $3.75 range.  Until recently, it has been hard to get a good view of the supply side dynamics.  This is largely because the shale phenomenon is so new that things have taken a while to sort out and for equilibriums to become established.  We are now beginning to get a clearer picture. Gas Production on Rise at Marcellus!

The number of rigs operating in the Marcellus gas play declined, though production there increased 72 percent since last year, the U.S. government reports.

The U.S. Energy Department reports that the number of oil and natural gas rigs active in the Utica shale play in the northeastern United States has doubled.

The U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Agency reports that year-on-year figures for October 2012 indicate rig activity in the play, spread out of the Appalachian Basin, has doubled. Read more »

Hurricane Sandy had only a minor impact on Marcellus Shale production, several operators in the play said. "Our operations, including production, were not adversely impacted by the storm," Cabot Oil & Gas spokesman George Stark said. Talisman Energy took the necessary measures before the storm, said Berta Gomez, the company's media relations adviser.
